Consistent environment protection and IIoT go hand in hand at Lorenz. This is why the company is not only awarded among the frontrunners of digitization, but also as one of "100 places for resource efficiency" - and almost unique with this combination.
The Environment Ministry and leading industry associations awarded Lorenz already in 2016 for a far-reaching remanufacturing concept that significantly reduces the use of materials and environmental impacts and maintains the competitiveness of high-quality materials. The award ceremony with Environment Minister Franz Untersteller took place at the Baden-Württemberg Resource Efficiency and Recycling Congress in Karlsruhe. Also present: Minister President Winfried Kretschmann.
It works: Circular economy protects the environment and maintains the competitiveness of high-quality materials
Water meters must be replaced at regular intervals due to calibration legislation and measuring accuracy, despite the fact that, in the case of high-quality products, many components are still in perfect condition even after usage and replacement. This is the basis for the concept, which is unique in the industry. Lorenz takes back replaced domestic water meters are taken back from metering services and water utilities in order to dismantle and reprocess them, so that the components can be returned to the production cycle as far as possible. This reduces material usage and environmental impact by 30 %, in the future with the latest generation of radio water meters even by up to 80 %.
The decisive success formula is that reprocessing also proves to be economically viable. After all, customers not only benefit from the use of high-quality measuring instruments, but also gain an economic advantage: the products are not only the clear winners in terms of total costs, but also remain superior to plastic alternatives even in pure unit price comparisons. In contrast, low-cost meters could only be disposed of after one-time installation, which then even generates new costs. Resource efficiency and environmental protection thus become a competitive advantage for high-quality water meters made in Germany.
Industry-wide leadership in sustainability also helps to secure market position
The employees and the management of Lorenz are proud to contribute to a more sustainable economy and to be an industry-wide leader. The efforts for ecology are not only part of the self-understanding as a responsible company. The measures, initially focused on environmental concerns, through all their effects also help to secure the company's market position and strengthen it lastingly.
About "100 Companies for Resource Efficiency"
The project "100 Companies for Resource Efficiency" is a key component of the "Alliance for More Resource Efficiency" between the state government and the state's leading trade associations, including the Landesverband der Industrie (LVI) and the state divisions of the Industrie- und Handelskammertag (BWIHK), the Verband der Chemischen Industrie (VCI), the Verband des Deutschen Maschinen- und Anlagenbaus (VDMA) and the Zentralverband der Elektrotechnik- und Elektronikindustrie (ZVEI). The project is technically supervised and organizationally coordinated by an association of the Institute for Industrial Ecology (INEC) of the Pforzheim University of Applied Sciences and Environmental Technology BW, the State Agency for Environmental Technology and Resource Efficiency.
